The company

Brewster Partners are delighted to be working in exclusive partnership with the Company of Cutlers in Sheffield. The Cutlers’ Company was established in 1624, its role has evolved over time and now its primary purpose is to promote manufacturing and the Sheffield City Region; building on its proud heritage and reputation for quality and innovation. Due to the impending retirement of Chief Executive, Col. George Kilburn MBE DL, after a decade of service, the Company are now looking to identify a successor. Reporting to the Master Cutler and Members of the Company (Board), the Chief Executive will have responsibility for all of the Company’s operations whilst also acting as Secretary to the Cutlers Hall Preservation Trust and The Cutlers’ Company Charitable Trust.

The job

The role is both broad and interesting with a wide range of duties including management of the successful and growing hospitality operation, organisation and management of events, representation of the Company at Livery Companies and elsewhere, management of the membership (Freeman and Friends), supporting the Company Board and various Committees and oversight of the education programme.
The position of Chief Executive is therefore demanding and challenging, requiring an outstanding individual with a strong work ethic and interpersonal skills, a commercially minded approach with financial awareness and above all, the ability to learn and adapt. Additionally, the Company’s representational responsibilities and activities require that the Chief Executive possesses or develops an interest in understanding the wider economic environment both regionally and nationally as well as the ability to interface between organisations, businesses and a range of outside agencies.
An interest in the Region and manufacturing is essential as candidates must be able to act as an ambassador for the Company. The post will require attendance at events outside normal working hours including some 35-40 outside the Region which normally mean overnight stays away from home.

The person

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to lead a small focussed team and have responsibility for the activities of the Company of Cutlers and its associated charities. This is a rewarding and enjoyable role in an excellent working environment. We are keen to hear from people whose skill set, including resilience and adaptability, is suited to this post. We would particularly like to hear from those with a Military or Civil Service background at an appropriate level and those who have experience in Livery Company/Guild circles or charitable organisations.
